Camp Open Air
at YMCA Camp Herring Ridge
for children ages 8 - 12
Asthma is a condition that limits many children. Unfortunately some children miss out on childhood experiences such as going away to summer camp because of their asthma. Asthmatic children no longer have to miss out because now they can attend asthma camps, where they can do all the activities that they choose, while also learning to cope with their asthma. Campers are taught how asthma affects them, how their asthma medication works, what triggers episodes and how to better manage their asthma so they can fully enjoy activities inside and outside.
Even though the children are active, they are monitored closely by counselors and have access to 24-hour on-site medical care consisting of nurses, respiratory therapists and a physician on call.

Benefits of Camp
Sending your child to a camp for children with asthma is one of the best decisions you will make! The camp experience is rich and rewarding, and your child will have memories and learn lessons that will last a lifetime while:
- Gaining self-confidence and becoming more independent
- Living in a community where cooperation, teamwork, and responsibility are essential
- Becoming skilled at managing their asthma through hands-on learning
- Making new friends from around the U.S.
- Experiencing new activities
- Having incredible amounts of fun
Camp provides your child with a peer support group, and they feel like "one of the gang". Activities at camp are age appropriate to meet the specific needs of the camper.
Asthma Education Program
The Camp Open Air mission is to educate children about managing and living with their asthma. All campers are involved in the asthma education program. It is designed to be entertaining, challenging and effective in teaching positive asthma care.
