Oncology/ Hematology
Wilkes Regional Medical Center Oncology Clinic serves adult patients from Wilkes and surrounding counties.

We offer various outpatient services which include:

  • Chemotherapy administration - the use of drugs to destroy and/or control the growth of cancer cells, relieve pain, prolong life, and prevent recurrence.
  • Blood and blood product transfusions and IV therapy.
  • Central venous access service
  • Bone marrow aspiration and biopsy
  • Various outpatient services not covered by home health care

Three Oncologists/Hematologists, Dr. Thomas Grote, Dr. Hugh Wallace and Dr. Lawrence Nycum. Each doctor travels with their Physicians Assistant from Forsyth Cancer Center in Winston-Salem to the outreach clinic at Wilkes Regional one day a week to evaluate, diagnose and treat patients with cancer or hematological disorders. The clinic is open from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Dr. Thomas Grote completed his Fellowship in Hematology at Duke Medical School in 1982. He then completed his medical residency at Vanderbilt University with clinical Fellowship in Medical Oncology in 1987.

Dr. Hugh Wallace completed his Fellowship Training in Hematology and Oncology at Medical College of Virginia in 1995 with specialty training in stem cell transplantation. He received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemistry at DePauw University in 1980.

Dr. Lawrence Nycum specializes in Gynecological Oncology and received his Fellowship in Gynecologic Oncology at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in 1999 and Post Doctoral Fellow in Obstetrics and Gynecology at John Hopkins University Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland in 1998.

Danielle Reuter, Physician Assistant, received her Bachelor of Science, Kinesiology from the University of Minnesota in 1997. She completed her Physician Assistant training at the Wake Forest University School of Medicine in 2001.

Sara Little, Physician Assistant, graduated from the Premed Program at the University of North Carolina-Greensboro in 1996. She completed her Physician Assistant training at the Wake Forest University School of Medicine in 2001.

The clinic is staffed by a full-time Registered Nurse, Carol Hunt; a full-time Certified Medical Assistant, Lesa Matherly; and a full-time Administrative Assistant, Joanna Felts.
