Employee: Angela Ellis, RN
Department: Emergency Department
A 16 month old child was brought to the ER with seizures. Angela stayed with the mother and her child to provide support and reassurance through a frightening and traumatic experience. Angela stayed by their bedside until the child was transported to Brenners Children's Hospital for additional evaluation. Angela went above and beyond the call of duty. The mother has expressed her appreciation for the compassion that Angela demonstrated during their visit to the Emergency Room at Wilkes, and does not know how she would have made it without Angela's help.
Employee: Debbie Mitchell, RN
Department: New Beginnings Birthing Center
Recently Debbie Mitchell, RN was serving in the role of Nursing Supervisor and was instrumental in finding personal belongings for a Mother who lost her son in an automobile accident. The body was taken from the scene and the personal belongings somehow went to one of the funeral homes, but not the funeral home that was involved with the funeral arrangements. The Mother's request was to find the personal belongings "so that she smell her son one last time" and have something of his to keep. Debbie spent hours and made countless phone calls to find the belongings. Debbie went above and beyond to help this Mother during her time of grief. She is to be commended for her dedication to excellence.
Employee: Dianne Proffit, RN
Department: Emergency Department
Dianne is one of the most professional and compassionate nurses that I have encountered in quiet some time. I've known Dianne, as a fellow employee, for many years. Unfortunately, I recently was ill and had to be admitted. While in the Emergency Department early that morning, Dianne took care of me with tender loving care just as a mother would do for her child. Words can't express how much that meant to me. Not only did she go to great lengths to make me as comfortable as possible, but she went to the waiting room to keep my elderly father-in-law informed and to let him know he could leave me to make his doctors appointment that morning. Dianne is a great example of a wonderful nurse and employee.
Employee: Elizabeth Wilson
Department: Diagnostic Imaging/ Ultrasound
Liz was a technician in the Diagnostic Imaging Department where a diagnostic procedure was being performed to determine if their had been previous changes since my last follow up. Liz was so pleasant and friendly and made me feel very comforatble during my procedure. I had just moved to Moravian Falls from Mississippi and my previous original films had to be requested from my former provider in Mississippi for the comparison. Liz was very helpful that day and in future days. I was very lucky to have Liz as one of my caregivers. She is very caring and gentle and shows a lot of compassion for her patients. She was there for me during a very difficult time.

Joe Cook in Home Health Department observed a lady attempting to enter the Chiropractor's Office. This lady was obviously in pain and severely stooped over. She had difficulty walking. Joe went and secured a wheelchair from DME company and assisted the lady. Joe did this without hesitation and acts such as these reflect his spirit of caring for his fellowman.
Employee: Kathleen Dawson, CRNA
Department: Anesthesia
While doing post-op rounds an elderly, not oriented, debilitated patient was complaining about how hungry she was. Kathy noted the patient's food tray had been put out of her reach and she wasn't even aware it had been brought to her. Kathy took the time to help feed the patient because she was unable to feed herself.
Employee: Carol Johnson
Department: Hospice - Home Health
Carol brought me a Cornish ham, brussel sprouts and full meal on Christmas Eve so I would have a Christmas meal. She brings me fresh peaches and new plants and flowers. I am legally blind but can see the color red fairly well so Carol brings me plants with red blooms. Carol was even kind enough to take my banana trees to her home and take care of them for me in her basement during cold weather.I appreciate all that she does for me!

On May 25th Denise performed the Heimlich maneuver on the daughter of one of her patient's and saved the daughter's life. The daughter was so thankful that Denise was present when she became choked and that Denise had acted so quickly to dislodge the food particle.
Employee: Kathleen Tesh
Department: 3rd Medical/ Pediatric Nursing Unit
In April, my brother was admitted the pneumonia. He also had a life long history of cerebal palsey and was a special needs patient. Kathleen took the time and patience with him and my mother to make a very scary and difficult situation less stressful. She knew that keeping my brother's routine was top priority, so she did all she could to keep him on his regular schedule. My brother has passed away now, but Kathleen helped to make his last days here as easy and comfortable as possible. To her we are grateful.
Employee: Wendy Hadschin
Department: Diagnostic Imaging/ Ultrasound
We feel Wendy is the prime example of what a shining star should be because she has demonstrated the most important aspect of her profession: patient comfort and care. The hospital received an email on 8/23 from a lady whose mother had had an ultrasound the day before. The patient was very nervous and upset about the procedure because of some previous health problems. Wendy put everything else on hold to stay with this lady and comfort her through the procedure. Wendy has displayed the true nature of her profession to human kind. We salute Wendy and hope everyone will follow her example of kindness and selflessness.
Employee: Brandy Sides
Department: Diagnostic Imaging/ Ultrasound
As an employee was leaving work one evening they saw Brandy helping an elderly lady find her vehicle in the parking lot. Apparently the lady forgot where she had parked. Brandy was holding her hand going down the rows of cars to find the lady's vehicle. This was a very kind and considerate gesture by Brandy.
Employee: Joey Elliot
Department: Clinical Engineering
I would like to nominate Joey for a shining star for helping me when I had my seizure in September at the hospital. Joey went and gathered the necessary help I needed to get me through my seizure and I'm thankful for him being there.
