Stereotactic breast biopsy is a new approach that utilizes a three-dimensional x-ray technique to guide a core needle to the biopsy site. Stereotactic breast biopsy is a safe and minimally invasive form of breast biopsy. It is used to obtain tiny samples from an abnormal breast mass for examination by a pathologist. Biopsies are the only definitive way to confirm that a breast abnormality is benign (non-cancerous) or not. The procedure is completed on an outpatient basis with a minimum of discomfort and recovery time.
The only prep that is required for this procedure is NPO (Nothing to eat) for 4 hours prior to your appointment time.
Helpful suggestions on the day of the biopsy:
- Bathe before the procedure. Do not wear powder, perfume, deodorant or sprays on your upper body.
- Wear soft comfortable clothing. A two piece outfit works well. No jewelry, buckles or zippers. These can cause increased discomfort.
- Wear a tight bra (preferably a sports bra) to minimize motion of the breast and to act as a compression bandage after the procedure. Keep this bra on for 24 to 48 hours after the biopsy.
- Do not take an aspirin for one week prior to the procedure. This will help to minimize the bleeding.
- Bring a family member or friend with you to provide support and to drive you home.
- No heavy lifting for 48 hours after the procedure.
- Empty your bladder prior to the procedure. The procedure will take approximately one hour to complete.
